Wild West Weed Co. began as an idea in 2023, when Eddy Spigott reached out to collaborate on a new cannabis retail brand he was launching in Kindersley, Saskatchewan. We had previously worked together on the branding for One Eye’s Weedery in Outlook, and this new project presented an opportunity to take things in a completely different direction. With the store still in its early planning stages and the name yet to be decided, we explored several concepts including Prairie Boys Pot Stop and K-Rok Kush Bar, before ultimately landing on Wild West Weed Co.

Located in the heart of oil country, Kindersley is known for its deep ties to the energy sector, with pump jacks dotting the horizon and a large portion of the community working in the surrounding oil fields. The goal was to create a brand that felt authentic to that environment. Something rugged, confident, and rooted in the grit and pride of the prairies. Through early conversations, it became clear the store should feel less like a modern dispensary and more like an old western saloon. A place with character, history, and attitude.

The final identity leans heavily into a classic western aesthetic, with a pump jack chosen as the primary logo and focal point. A nod to both the region’s oil heritage and a former water tower landmark in Kindersley that once featured a similar symbol. The result is a bold, distinctive brand that feels right at home in oil country. Built for long days, hard work, and a community that values authenticity, Wild West Weed Co. stands as a modern western take on cannabis retail.

The initial concept phase explored a wide range of visual directions, including stars, cowboy hats, character illustrations, typographic containers, western-style badges, and abbreviated initial marks. Several brand name options were also considered before settling on Wild West Weed Co. An early point of interest was the “WWW” abbreviation, which stood out as a highly ownable and distinctive letter combination for the brand. While not every direction was pursued, the process helped clarify what felt most authentic to the community, the oilfield setting, and the western spirit the brand was aiming to capture.

Inspired by traditional Wild West lettering and frontier signage, the wordmark reflects the rugged heritage and working-class roots of the region. Its strong, structured forms ensure the brand reads clearly and confidently across every touchpoint.

While it wasn’t my initial favourite direction, the pump jack quickly proved to be the most meaningful and authentic symbol for the brand. In a community shaped by the oil industry, it’s an instantly recognizable landmark and a daily reality for much of the clientele. The final mark was designed to stay true to the classic pump jack silhouette, resulting in a symbol that feels both timeless and instantly identifiable.

To support the primary mark, a suite of secondary logos was developed to give the brand flexibility across different applications. These include a wooden sign–inspired lockup and abbreviated “W” mark, a Saskatchewan-shaped logo, and a circular badge referencing traditional cattle stamps and welded metal plaques. Each was designed to feel authentic to the western aesthetic while remaining clean, legible, and highly usable. Stroke and solid inverted versions were created for every mark to ensure consistency and versatility across signage, packaging, apparel, and digital use.

The visual identity is supported by a considered system of typography, colour, and supporting elements that give the brand both structure and personality. Riudoso was selected as the primary typeface for its classic western character, drawing from traditional Wild West typography to bring heritage, grit, and authenticity to the brand. It is paired with Alternate Gothic in uppercase for bold, utilitarian headlines, Work Sans for body copy and digital use, and Brush ATF as a complementary script to add warmth and character where needed.

The colour palette was built to reflect the landscape and materials of the prairies. Prairie Grass anchors the system as the primary green, while Blaze and Harvest introduce high-contrast energy through orange and yellow accents. Saddle Wood and Tumble Weed add depth through rich and lighter brown tones, balanced by Linen as a soft off-white and Soot as a grounded, inky black. Together, the palette brings a rugged, sun-worn quality to the brand while remaining flexible across packaging, signage, apparel, and digital applications.
