Caragana Carpentry Co. is a Regina-based woodworking studio led by craftsman Stafford Bates, specializing in custom furniture, millwork, and restoration. Inspired by the prairie landscape and the resilient Caragana trees that line its fields, the studio was founded on a respect for traditional techniques and the belief that good work should last for generations.

The goal for the Caragana brand was to capture the care, honesty, and skill behind every project. It needed to feel grounded and timeless while remaining adaptable for use across tools, signage, and apparel. Through conversations about Stafford’s process, themes of heritage and craftsmanship emerged, reflecting his approach to building with intention and patience.

The identity centers on a handcrafted logomark featuring a vintage hand plane, supported by typography and colours that echo the tones of wood, soil, and hard work. The result is a brand that feels enduring and personal, one that honours tradition while shaping a future for modern craft.

The process began with a series of sketches exploring how to capture the spirit of Caragana Carpentry. Early concepts drew inspiration from classic tools, wood textures, and the prairies themselves. The vintage hand plane quickly stood out as a fitting symbol — a reminder of tradition, craftsmanship, and patience. The result is a mark that feels timeless and personal, built to represent the care and integrity behind every piece Stafford creates.

The Caragana wordmark is built from a custom typeface created by the designer, Loose Hand Luke. Inspired by the hand-lettered markings often found on old tools and wood crates, it features small irregularities and shifting forms that give it life. Each letter carries the feeling of something made by hand — honest, imperfect, and built to last.

To complement the primary logo, we created a pair of flag emblems that carry the spirit of Broad Stripes in different ways. One features bold, graphic stripes that nod to the course’s name and the fresh-cut fairways they represent. The other incorporates the BS initials, reminiscent of vintage military insignias. Both strike a balance between tradition and attitude, working seamlessly across events and apparel. For special occasions—like the high-energy Moto X event that saw riders soaring over fairway mounds—we pushed the system even further with a custom logo that brought new edge to the brand without losing its roots.

This project was a way to celebrate craftsmanship and the pride that comes from doing things the right way. It was an honour to create something lasting for my best friend and the work he loves.
